Relocating Containers for the DZN Aid Organisation

work diary

This call-out was about relocating and positioning sea containers.

Our voluntary work in the Ahr valley is very extensive, and the individual aid organisations can always count on us and make use of our expertise and our equipment for their relief work.

Unfortunately, not everything can be planned in a disaster area, and the required equipment and machinery are not always available. You have to make do with what is there and see every day what is feasible.

The sea containers had been stacked on top of each other with a loader crane. To lift them apart again with the excavator on site, the right lifting accessories had to be defined in order to make the best possible use of the excavator's lifting height. As the excavator unfortunately did not have a particularly long arm, the lifting accessories had to be assembled so that lifting height and sling angle were still within acceptable limits.

The containers were then moved into position using the excavator and many hard-working volunteers from the DZN aid organisation, where they were set down on plates and aligned.

As can be seen in the pictures, the site had suffered somewhat from the heavy rainfall of the previous days, so additional ground protection mats had to be laid along all travel routes.

The access road was also made passable with gravel using tractors and tipper trucks, which we then compacted over the following days.

Tobias Schott

Managing director of Omega Mounting GmbH, Rodgau · more than 20 years of hands-on experience in installation and maintenance

A trained mechatronics technician, at home in maintenance, servicing and industrial installation since 2004 – first alongside his father, and since 2012 with Omega Mounting: from the overhead conveyor in Frankfurt to the crane system in a new-build hall. As appointed person for lifting operations, he plans and leads lifting operations in data centers and on industrial sites in the Rhine-Main region, is an instructor and examiner for cranes, aerial work platforms and telehandlers, and a safety officer. On assignments abroad he is known as the "German Troubleshooter" – the one you call when things get stuck on site. He did not learn what quality means from a manual, but from his father: Made in Germany as a standard for his own work, not as a label. That is why quality comes first at Omega Mounting – before speed and before price. The project diary shows the jobs his team has planned and carried out – without customer names, but with everything that can be learned from them.
