Replacing a fan bearing in an automotive paint shop – maintenance in the Offenbach area

1.40-metre fan including motor removed on a self-fabricated rail system

Bearing replacement and overhaul precisely within the weekend shutdown

When a fan bearing wears out in a paint shop, every day counts. The plant's fans run practically non-stop during production – in the worst case, a bearing failure can shut down the entire painting line.

At a large automotive industry company in the Offenbach area, we were entrusted with exactly this task: replacing the fan bearing on a large process air fan of an industrial paint shop.

The special feature: the fan impeller measures around 1.40 metres in diameter and sits directly on the drive motor – so the complete motor and fan unit had to be removed.

Our concept: one day of preparation, one day of execution – timed precisely to the plant's weekend shutdown. On Monday, production was running again as usual.

Project profile

What role does the fan play in a paint shop?

Industrial paint shops permanently require large quantities of conditioned air.

Powerful fans ensure controlled airflow in the paint booths – and thus consistent paint quality.

These fans run almost without interruption during production. Their bearings are therefore among the most heavily stressed wear parts of the entire plant. If a worn bearing is not replaced in time, there is a risk of vibration, consequential damage to the motor and impeller – and, in the worst case, an unplanned shutdown of the paint shop.

That is why a bearing replacement is ideally carried out as a planned job: in a fixed maintenance window, with complete preparation – exactly as on this project.

Why was the removal so demanding?

The short answer: because the bearing was not freely accessible.

The approx. 1.40-metre fan impeller sits directly on the motor – and the complete unit is buried deep inside the plant.

Simple access from outside was not possible. To get to the bearing, the entire motor and impeller unit had to be pulled out of the plant in a controlled manner

– without damaging the adjacent control cabinets, cladding and pipework, and in the tightest of spaces between the plant components.

How do you pull a fan out of the plant "as if on rails"?

Our solution: a custom-made rail system on which the motor and fan unit could be run out of the plant like a train.

On the preparation day, our fitters fabricated and welded the rail system from square steel tubing directly on site – aligned exactly to the fan's withdrawal direction. The photos show clearly how the rail structure runs through the narrow aisle between the control cabinets right up to the plant.

In addition, a gantry crane was used. With it we were able to lift the motor and fan unit safely off its mounting stand after running it out and make it accessible for the overhaul.

This combination of rail system and gantry crane has two decisive advantages: the unit, weighing tonnes, moves in a controlled and guided manner at all times – and the removal also works where there is simply no room for a forklift or overhead crane.

Electrics from a single source:

Disconnection and reconnection by our own electricians

Before removal, the motor was properly disconnected by our own electricians – after the overhaul, they likewise handled the complete reconnection.

For the customer this means: no additional trade, no interface problems, no waiting times between mechanical and electrical work.

Mechanical removal, electrical work and recommissioning all come from a single source at Omega Mounting – a workflow that pays off especially in tight maintenance windows.

Overhaul, bearing replacement and reinstallation in one day

On the execution day, every step then dovetailed with the next:

The close-ups show the details of this work: the removed fan impeller, the taper bush of the hub and the neatly terminated terminal box after reconnection.

By the end of the weekend the plant was fully reassembled, sealed and ready for operation – production could start on Monday without restriction.

Everything you need to know about our services

The fans of a paint shop run almost without interruption during production. Their bearings therefore wear over time – often noticeable as vibration or running noise.

A timely, planned bearing replacement prevents consequential damage to the motor and impeller and protects against unplanned production downtime.

If the impeller sits directly on the motor, the complete unit usually has to be removed. On this project we fabricated a rail system on site for this purpose, ran the unit out in a controlled manner, lifted it off the mounting stand with a gantry crane and reinstalled it in reverse order after the overhaul.

Yes – with the right preparation. On this project, the rail system was fabricated and everything made ready on the preparation day; the actual removal, overhaul and reinstallation took place on a single day during the weekend shutdown. On Monday, production was running normally again.

In many plants there is simply no room for a forklift or overhead crane. A custom-made rail system guides the heavy unit in a controlled manner in the withdrawal direction – combined with a compact gantry crane, the load can be lifted and set down safely even in the tightest of spaces.

Yes. Our own electricians disconnected the motor before removal and reconnected it after the overhaul. Mechanical, welding and electrical work come from a single source with us – without interfaces between different companies.
