Racking Repair in Fulda

Following an inspection, there was a list of defects: repair the racking and replace damaged parts.

During the inspection of the racking warehouse, it became apparent that inspection and maintenance of the installation had not been carried out properly for several years, so that more and more parts had gradually failed and now needed repairing.

Pallet racking installation in a warehouse – racking modification and racking repair during live operation

Overview

For this, we organised an aerial work platform and the right spare parts for the racking. These included uprights, beams and bracing. Piece by piece, we replaced the individual racking components.

As the customer wanted the repairs to be carried out during ongoing operations, we emptied and closed off individual racking aisles.

When working at height, it is essential to ensure that nobody is walking around in the aisles and that all employees in the danger zone are equipped with the appropriate PPE.

We too attach the greatest importance to safe harnesses and the right equipment for our employees when climbing.

Racking installations should be inspected and maintained regularly so that the racks pose no hazard whatsoever.

Moreover, the investment required grows the longer maintenance is postponed, and more and more parts of the installation may have to be taken out of service. This means important storage locations are lost and the production process is disrupted.

Especially in warehouses served by forklifts or reach trucks, damage occurs time and again and must be repaired promptly!

In general, we advise reporting damage immediately and having it repaired as quickly as possible, as even minor damage to an upright has led to major accidents and entire racking rows have collapsed.

Thanks to good preparation, the repair was carried out within two days and the customer was able to release and use all storage locations in the high-bay racking again. Of course, we also carried out a new racking inspection for him, giving him peace of mind for another year until the next inspection. If a racking system is to be converted rather than repaired, the procedure is explained in our guide converting racking during live operations.

About the author

Tobias Schott

Managing director of Omega Mounting GmbH, Rodgau · more than 20 years of hands-on experience in installation and maintenance

A trained mechatronics technician, at home in maintenance, servicing and industrial installation since 2004 – first alongside his father, and since 2012 with Omega Mounting: from the overhead conveyor in Frankfurt to the crane system in a new-build hall. As appointed person for lifting operations, he plans and leads lifting operations in data centers and on industrial sites in the Rhine-Main region, is an instructor and examiner for cranes, aerial work platforms and telehandlers, and a safety officer. On assignments abroad he is known as the "German Troubleshooter" – the one you call when things get stuck on site. He did not learn what quality means from a manual, but from his father: Made in Germany as a standard for his own work, not as a label. That is why quality comes first at Omega Mounting – before speed and before price. The project diary shows the jobs his team has planned and carried out – without customer names, but with everything that can be learned from them.
